GDIT 706: Developing a Learning Environment Using IT

Course Description

The purpose of this course was to give the student an opportunity to develop general and specific knowledge and skills related to the design of curricula with instructional technologies.

Project Description

The Technological Pedagogical Content Knowledge, also known as TPACK, is a form of knowledge required for effective technology integration in teaching. We were taught to use the TPACK model to design online learning. I designed a World Wide Education (WWE) online learning platform for the purpose of providing supplemental education to students in China. The WWE will provide online pedagogical support to what is being taught in the public school system. Some features include self-pacing and analytics to improve the matching of educational content with skill level.

After developing the paper for the class, I also submitted this work as an abstract to 10th International Conference on e-Learning that took place June 25-26, 2015 at College of the Bahamas in Nassau, the Bahamas. There, I had an opportunity to share my research and serve as a panelist at an event.

Reflection

I designed the platform with the Chinese public education system in mind, because I feel this platform could really help improve education in China. However, this is the first time I have designed an education platform, and I feel that to do a good job, I need ideas from others. Therefore, attending a conference where I shared my ideas and received feedback was very valuable. Also, I was excited to gain experience serving on a panel.

Traveling to the Bahamas for this conference did expend some of my valuable time and resources, but I felt it was a valuable experience to promote my professional growth. I was able to network with others and become more fluent in educational technology by learning about other platforms and projects. I feel it is worth allocating time and resources to ensure access to ongoing professional growth so I can remain fluent in the current technology, and continue to integrate this knowledge into what I already know.
