Artifact & Course Description:

Course Title

GDIT 726: Education in a Global Society

Course Description

In this course, students compared the educational systems in the United States with systems in other countries, such as China. Specific issues received focus, including the impact of globalization, global curriculum, different pedagogical approaches, the role of instructional technology, the connection between economics and work, and issues associated with marginalized populations.

Project Description

There are two projects for this artifact. In the first project, each member of the class was assigned two countries to investigate and summarize their educational system. I was assigned Japan, and to work on China with a group. Once these summaries were collected, each student was assigned to develop his or her own “schooling route” to present the data. I designed mine in Prezi, which is the first artifact.

The second artifact was an assignment that was part of the China group’s work. We were to develop a group presentation teaching the class about the Chinese educational system.

Reflection

I grew up in China, and as part of the China work group, I was able to contribute unique insights from my experience. But this class also taught me how different each education system is, and made me think about global education. Although I learned about China and Japan from my specific assignments, we were also taught about Europe and other parts of the world. The Asian education system is different than ones in Europe and the United States, so knowing all these differences empowers me to innovate. Even though I plan to work in the Chinese education system, students migrate, and they need to be prepared to flourish in other systems. Also, the Chinese system could be improved by implementing some features of other systems around the globe.

This class gave me a chance to work with other to facilitate developing a shared cultural understanding. Just sharing my insight into the Chinese system from my childhood made me realize how important global issue are, and that we can use contemporary communication and collaboration tools, such as Prezi, to improve our knowledge transfer. Working in globally-minded groups to model use of this shared communication and these shared tools can help all of us better accommodate learners all over the world.
